Welcome to Jeremy Crouthamel’s Teaching Portfolio!

“Be an opener of doors for such as come after thee.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

My name is Jeremy Crouthamel and I am a candidate in the 2010 Master of Arts in Teaching program at Duke University. I am a 2009 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I focused my learning on content knowledge and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Spanish. This website is a glimpse into what I have spent the past year learning and accomplishing in Durham. Through course work at Duke and teaching internships in two different Durham County Public Schools, I have grown both as a person, and as an educator.  This website is a reflection of that growth.

I began this journey with course work during the summer of 2009. I took courses in effective teaching strategies and spent time learning about adolescent psychology and how it affects the students I encounter on a daily basis. Following the successful completion of these courses, I began my first placement at Northern High School in Durham, North Carolina in the Fall of 2009.  Under the able hands of my mentor, Nancy Duffner, I taught three courses in English III: Standard, Standard/Inclusion, and Honors English III.  During this placement I learned effective classroom management and sharpened my teaching skills as a beginner teacher. I also broadened my content and pedagogical knowledge through course work at Duke in Shakespeare as well as a Masters course in education, while auditing a class centered on educational technology.

Following the Fall semester at Northern, I moved to Durham School of the Arts for the Spring 2010 semester. There, guided by my phenomenal mentor, Teresa Del Dotto, I gained experience teaching English I to integrated classes of standard/honors students.  During my time at DSA, I was able to further extend my teaching experience, this time with more of a focus on pedagogy and content.  During this placement I also took courses at Duke in American literature, in the teaching of writing, and continued my studies with the MAT course work.

This website contains my philosophies on teaching, critical analyses of standards, student work, reflections, lesson plans, and more. Feel free to search throughout the website. If you have any questions or comments, please email jeremy.crouthamel@gmail.com. Thank you for your time!
